You only have one chance to make a first impression, so be sure to make the best impression possible. If you want to command top dollar and get your house sold quickly, you need to not only hire the best Realtor, but also prepare your house for sale.
People do not want to move in to a house that looks used, worn-down and in need of major TLC. They want to buy a house that speaks to them as soon as they enter the front door.
Here are 10 simple, inexpensive tips to show off your house and have buyers envision themselves living there:
- Keep a clean house. Vacuum, dust, make the beds, clean the bathrooms, don’t leave dishes in the sink.
- Fresh smells. Take out the trash daily, clean the bathrooms, don’t let the laundry pile up, deodorize all pet smells, don’t smoke indoors.
- Curb appeal. Mow, weed, mulch and plant flowers.
- First impressions. Buy a new welcome mat and hang a new wreath on the front door.
- Furniture. Rearrange furniture to best show off the rooms and to emphasize the space.
- Depersonalize. You want potential buyers to be able to picture themselves living in your house.
- Set the table. Put out place setting and add a centerpiece (fresh or fake flowers, fruit, etc.) to the dining table.
- Spa. Create a spa-like setting in the bathrooms with soaps, candles, plush towels. Buy a new shower curtain, liner and bath mat.
- Declutter and get organized. Start boxing up items you don’t need, empty out closets so they appear more spacious, put your personalize items away.
- Add textures and color. Place accent pillows and drape a throw on your sofa, put a quilt at the end of your bed, bring greenery indoors (even if it is fake).
